Our History

Montessori International Children’s House (affectionately known as MICH) was founded in 1985 by parents eager to continue their children’s Montessori education after Montessori International Academy closed unexpectedly.

MICH opened with seventy students in two primary classes and a three-day toddler community. A third primary class was added the following year.

In 1986 we moved from Joyce Lane in Arnold to our current North Winchester Road campus in Annapolis. The next year we added our lower elementary program.

In 1994 we opened an upper elementary class and in 1999 added a second lower elementary class.

We have been fully recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale since 1995.

MICH is very proud of its achievements, with thanks and gratitude to our very supportive extended community. Our Toddler Community now meets five days per week and serves nine students. We have four primary classes, two lower elementary classes, and an upper elementary class. Our media center consists of over 11,000 books and materials and our computer lab. Our Extended Day Program accommodates students from 7:00 am – 6:00 pm, and has expanded to serve our Toddlers from 8:15 – 3:00 pm. We have a staff of 28 serving more than 160 students.

MICH has achieved national status as one of the top Montessori school in the country and is the largest and most preeminent Montessori School in the greater Annapolis area. For the last 10 years we have been voted the Best Montessori School in the greater Annapolis are. For the last 4 years we have been voted the Best Lower Private School in the greater Annapolis area.
